Gary L. Skundberg

Kenyon—Gary Loren Skundberg, 78, of Kenyon, died Thursday, September 19, 2019 at Methodist Hospital, Rochester.

He was born April 8, 1941 in Viroqua, WI the son of Reuben and Clara (Hanson) Skundberg and was raised in Westby, WI. Gary graduated from Westby High School and Luther College. On August 17, 1963 Gary married Mary Ericksen in Minneapolis. The couple lived and taught in Iowa and Minnesota prior to moving to Kenyon in 1967. Gary was an instrumental music teacher in Kenyon Schools until his retirement in 1999. During his career in Kenyon he attended summer classes and received his master's degree from Vandercook College of Music. In retirement Gary enjoyed traveling as a guide on trips to various countries as well as driving the bus for Shorewood Senior Living in Rochester.

Gary was a member of Sons of Norway, Cribbage Club, T.B. Sheldon Brass Band, St. Croix Brass and various other quartets and quintets. He enjoyed teaching cribbage, traveling, camping, downhill skiing, biking and sailing. He also was very active attending symphony orchestra concerts and various other musical events. He cherished time spent with family, friends and attending his grandchildren's events.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Skundberg of Kenyon; daughters, Anne (and Dave) Haugland of Waconia, Sara (and Scott) Koehler of Northfield, Kari (and Scott) Franz of Northfield; grandchildren, Marya Haugland, Sophia Haugland, Erik Haugland, Katherine Koehler, Sidney Koehler, Lillian Koehler, Emma Torstenson, Sam Torstenson, Matthew Franz, Tanner Franz, Stephanie Franz; sister, Rachel (and Conrad) Favor of Stevens Point, WI, Cheryl (and James) Thompson of Goose Creek, SC and several beloved cousins, nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and cherished nephew, Daniel Favor.

Memorial services will be held Saturday, September 28, 2019 at 1pm at First Evangelical Lutheran Church, Kenyon with gathering time from 12pm to 1pm. A memorial reception where the family will be receiving guests will be held after the service from 2-5pm in the church fellowship hall. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be directed to the family in an effort to establish a memorial in Gary's name.
